The preview of...

Atlético Astorga FC - Sevilla FC, the second round of the 2023/24 Copa del Rey. The match will kick off at 21:00 CET at the Municipal La Eragudina, Astorga, León.

History and current league campaign

Atlético Astorga FC was founded in 1969, replacing Astorga CF, which had been playing since 1944. The best seasons in their history were the 2014/15 and 2015/16 campaigns, having played in the Spanish third tier. They currently play in the Tercera RFEF, the Spanish fifth tier, in group 8, dedicated to teams from Castilla y León. This season sees them in 14th position with two wins, six draws and five defeats from their 13 matches.

Astorga's Copa del Rey run

Having finished as league runners-up last year, Atlético Astorga qualified to play in the Copa del Rey for the first time since the 2014/15 season, in which they were knocked out in the first round by Racing de Ferrol. However in this year's first round they beat FC Andorra, a team from the Spanish second tier. The game finished 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ivi Vales.

Squad news

With eleven players ruled out through injury, Diego Alonso has named a 22-man squad to travel to León. This includes many youth players in addition to Alberto Flores, Matías and Manu Bueno, who are regularly called up. Full-backs Darío and Oso, as well as centre-back Xavi Sintes, will travel to Astorga.

Referee

Alejandro Muñiz Ruiz, from Galicia, will be the man in charge of the match. He was the referee for our 2-2 draw against Deportivo Alavés in 2021/22 and for last season's Copa del Rey first round 2-0 victory over Velarde CF. He was also part of the team of officials for our 2-0 home defeat to Girona back in May. He will be a little more familiar with the home side, having taken charge of four of their games while they were in the third tier almost ten years ago. Astorga only managed a draw and three defeats from those games.
