History

Unión Deportiva Las Palmas were founded in 1949 after the merger of five local clubs from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. Nicknamed Los Amarillos, (The Yellows), Las Palmas has won the Segunda División four times and were La Liga runners-up in 1968/69 and in the Copa del Rey in 1977/78. Remarkably, they achieved back-to-back promotions to La Liga in their first two seasons – the only side in Spanish football to have achieved this. They have been promoted into La Liga four times since then, including most recently in the 2022/23 season after a five-year absence.

Standings

After finishing 16th in their first season back since being promoted from the Segunda División, Las Palmas have found life difficult this season and find themselves in 19th place on 32 points from 35 games – three points from safety. Since recording back-to-back wins against Getafe (3-1) and Atlético de Madrid (1-0) in mid-April, they have lost three in a row against Athletic Club, Valencia and Rayo Vallecano and will be looking to get the points in their bid to avoid relegation.

Coach: Diego Martínez

Born in Vigo, Diego Martínez retired from professional football at the age of 20 and began coaching in Spain’s lower leagues before joining Sevilla, where he progressed from youth coach to assistant and Sevilla Atlético manger where he achieved promotion to the Segunda División in 2016. He later led Osasuna and Granada, earning promotion to La Liga with the latter and guiding them to a historic Europa League quarter final. He also managed Espanyol and Olympiacos. Martínez returned to La Liga in October 2024 to take charge of Las Palmas. He has also managed the Galician national team.
