Since that defeat in the derby in March 2014, we have only lost to Athletic Bilbao (on penalties) and drawn to Slavia Prague in 2019 and CFR 1907 Cluj in 2020

It will not be a surprise to say that Sevilla FC take to UEFA Europa League as a fish does to water. It is undeniable that the club has won this competition the most times, twice as many as their nearest competitor on the list. Even if our participation in the competition has been limited as we have often qualified for the Champions League, the statistics speak for themselves. If you were to focus just on the fixtures at home, the stats are even more impressive.

Last night in the victory against PSV Eindhoven, Sevilla claimed their 25th victory in the last 28 Europa League matches played at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. This is a run of games which began with the frustrating derby loss in the Last 16 of 2013/14, when we lost 0-2 but managed to pass into the next round via a penalty shootout win in Heliópolis. Nine years later, only one side has beaten our side at a stadium that has become a true fortress of the Europa League. Interestingly, it was another Spanish side, Athletic Bilbao, who defeated us 1-2 in April 2016. Once again, we progressed into the semifinals on penalties with David Soria heroics helping us. That year we would go onto win our fifth Europa League title in Basil.

Only Athletic Bilbao buck this trend when they beat us in 2016, yet they failed to win the tie as we would go through on penalties

There have been two sides that have managed to scrape draws. In 2019 this was the case for Slavia Prague, who took a 2-2 draw to the Czech Republic before being beaten in the second leg. The most recent draw was 0-0 against Cluj in 2019/20, our final European game with fans before the pandemic. So, 25 victories including that of last night, and in 18 of those we have kept a clean sheet, as we did against PSV.

Only seven teams: Porto, Standard Liege (twice), Villarreal, Zenit, Shakhtar Donetsk and Dinamo Zagreb have been able to score in their losses at the Sánchez-Pizjuán. To round things off, in these 28 games we have scored 69 goals and conceded 11, making it clear that the most successful club in the tournament's history takes pride in defending this record when playing at home.
