The first round draw for the Copa del Rey took place on Sunday morning. The format of the cup has changed for this season, with matches played over one leg instead of two, and with the lower-division side hosting the match. The first round takes place on 17th-19th December, and Sevilla will travel to Bergantiños FC.
The side were founded in 1923 and compete in Group 1 of the Third Division (fourth tier). They are in 17th place after twelve matches. Last season they finished runners up to Racing Club Ferrol, the side that Sevilla were supposed to face last week in a centenary friendly, but was postponed due to Storm Cecilia. Bergantiños progressed to the promotion play-offs, beating CD Covadonga in the first round but falling against CF Villarubia in the second round.
The Galician side play at Campo de Fútbol As Eiroas in Carballo, with a capacity of 400. Bergantiños are named after the neighbourhood in the town of Carballo, with a population of 31,000. The club's golden era came towards the end of the 1980s, spending two seasons in Segunda B (third tier) between 1987 and 1989. Jesús Navas, who took part in making the draw, said "it's important that the cup was expanded. Now it will be nicer and more exciting. Hopefully we all enjoy it".
