After many days without football, it was back with a bang at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. The dominant win against the old enemy last night meant that Julen Lopetegui's men have again reached 50 points, this time with 10 games to spare. Strangely, hitting the 50 point mark against the team from Heliópolis is something that has happened often in recent seasons.
Looking back at how Sevilla FC has hit the fifty point mark in recent seasons, it normally comes with a win against the old enemy at home. Last season's 3-2 win and the 2-0 win in 2015/16 both took the Nervionenses to 52 points, however those matches were in Matchdays 32 and 35 respectively, as opposed to last night's win in Matchday 28.
Like in 2016/2017, the team has options to stay on course for the main aim
Although the half century of points in 2017/18 was brought up against Real Madrid, a 3-2 win in Nervión taking the side to 51 points, a win in Matchday 24 in Heliópolis took the side to 52 points in 2016/17, when Jorge Sampaoli was manager. The team were in third position and did indeed secure a place in the Champions League, finishing in fourth place with 72 points.
With 30 points still to play for, the numbers and the formbook appear very promising, as Sevilla try to continue picking up wins to stay in the UEFA Champions League places and secure qualification.
