Monchi appeared in front of the official media this morning in a city which is special for the club: "The city in itself has already brought back some wonderful memories, where our success in Europe began. It is impossible being here and not reminiscing about that, it was a different team but it set the foundations for what we have achieved as a club since. Arriving to the stadium, thinking about where I watched the game, how the stadium was that day... there are many memories. The first and the third of these stay with me in particular, but Eindhoven was most important in ending our trophy drought. For any sevillista, this was a historic moment in their life."
With respect to the challenges we will face tonight, he was firm: "Of course I can see them. We are in a good position but it is not over yet, especially as away goals is no longer a thing in Europe. Before, if we scored a goal in this game they would have to score five, but this is no longer the case. I imagine that they will be spurred on by their fans and will try to get back into the fixture. We shouldn't forget that they hit the post in the last game, Bono made some good saves and they were on top for the first twenty minutes. We would be misled in believing that it is all over."
He was also asked about how the team has improved after the transfer market: "It's what we had in mind. We didn't plan well in the Summer, we have been able to fix a few things now and also some players who did not start well, are now performing to a good level. All of these factors have helped to create a team more similar to what we had in mind. The support of the coach and the improved fitness of the players has helped us get closer to what Sevilla ought to be, without yet having reached our best."
"This Sevilla is more like the team we had in mind, we have been able to amend a few things"
The objective for the team?: "At 21:00, be getting on the plane having qualified for the next round. After what we have all suffered and what is happening, we ought to try and keep the consistency we have shown and win. There are sixteen games left in the league season but we cannot forget how much we have suffered and where we have come from, and we should remember that now and going forward too."
On En-Nesyri: "With the injuries there are, the players that we have will have to play more and so there is a chance that there will be more injuries. He has a few niggles in his leg and he often starts, gives his all, and so we have to be careful with him. We have a few more options up-front than at the back, but strikers are all about goal streaks . He scored 25 goals in his first season and we cannot forget this. He seems to be more himself now than he has in the past, but how all strikers do depends on form and confidence. He came back from the World Cup with a point to prove and wanting to help the team. Some players have moved away but he didn't want to. As a result, he has been in good form and so has the team.
"They have a lot of attacking options and they send numbers forward in attack"
On the return of injured players: "It's a problem at the back. We have four centre-backs, three out-and-out and one that can play there, who are all injured. As much as you may want to move things around, you have to understand that sometimes you cannot. Gudelj will be there on Sunday and we hope that Rekik and Badé will be available as soon as possible."
From defence we turn our attention to the midfield and how Gueye has settled in: "When a new player arrives, you have to give them time and space to settle in but he has not needed any of that. He has only played three games for us but in Vallecas he had an amazing first-half. With regard to whether he stays, when the moment comes you will see that whatever happens has already been planned. There is dialogue and an agreement in place between the two clubs."
He argues that PSV have a lot to offer in attack: "They have a lot of attacking options and they send numbers forward in attack, and this worries me because we are not as strong defensively as we normally would be. They are good in one-on-one situations, and both Silva and de Jong are great finishers. We have to be emotionally prepared for the game."
Finally, he spoke about the team being favourites to win the Europa League: "Those statements I made to UEFA over a month ago. They ask me and I always say that Sevilla should be the favourite. I know that saying this is risky but if you have won six titles, you have got to be aiming to reach the final stage of the competition. It's a very long competition and we don't have many points in LaLiga."
