Sevilla FC now know their potential opponents in the play-off round of the Champions League, the final round before the group stages. The surprising outcome of the third qualifying round has meant that Sporting Lisbon have advanced four places in the coefficient table and are fifth seed so they cannot provide opposition for Sevilla.
Both of the seeded teams, Dynamo Kiev and Ajax, who were set to be in the same pot as Sevilla, suffered defeated at the hands of Young Boys and Nice respectively; however Victoria Plzen and Club Brugge were also beaten by FCSB (the new name of Romanian side Steaua) and İstanbul Başakşehir, who were lower down the rankings. Only Russian side CSKA have advanced as a seeded team, and will not be an opponent for Sevilla.
Hoffenheim must also be added to the four teams already named as potential opposition, as the German outfit have already qualified directly for the play-off, and have also been presented as a potential opponent from the outset.
Now all that's left to do is to wait for the draw, which will take place at the UEFA HQ in Nyon this Friday at 12pm. The die is... almost cast.
