Last season
Villareal CF finished the season in 8th place on 53 points with 14 wins, 11 draws and 13 defeats.
Head coach
After the departure of Quique Setién, Villarreal appointed Marcelino García Toral as their new manager. Having played for Sporting Gijón, Racing Santander, Levante and Elche he retired aged just 28 due to injury. Marcelino then began his managerial career in the lower leagues before taking charge of Recreativo de Huelva and his old club Racing Santander. At Racing he guided them to a historic sixth-place finish and UEFA Cup qualification. He went on to manage Zaragoza, Sevilla, and Villarreal, achieving top-six finishes and a Europa League semi-final with the latter. After stints at Valencia, where he won the Copa del Rey, and Athletic Club, Marcelino briefly managed Marseille before returning to Villarreal in November 2023.
Pre-season results
Las Palmas played a total of six friendlies over pre-season, recording one win against Swiss side Sion, draws against Nottingham Forest and Borussia Dortmund and defeats against Leicester City, Saint-Étienne and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Summer transfer window
Villarreal’s impressive climb up the league in the latter half of last season was largely driven by Alexander Sorloth's remarkable form, netting 23 goals. However, with Sorloth now at Atletico Madrid, Villarreal have cashed in on several players, including goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, Ben Brereton Diaz, and Jorge Cuenca. They’ve already reinvested by signing 19-year-old defender Willy Kambwala as well as taking advantage to sign free agents including Sergi Cardona, Nicolas Pepe, and Pape Gueye.
