After a miserable run to a difficult season and up against a Villarreal side on a run of five straight wins, we couldn't end the season on a high as we fell to defeat. After just eight minutes, Marcelino's side were already ahead with goals from Yeremi and Pape Gueye. Although Sow reduced the deficit with a good header, Baena scored Villarreal's third to restore the two-goal cushion. Former player Gueye then scored his second of the afternoon to make it 4-1. Late on, Ramón Martínez scored his first goal for the club to make it 4-2 but in the end it proved to little too late.

Villarreal came out with their sights set on winning the game as quickly as possible and did so, probably even sooner than Marcelino would have expected. Only eight minutes in, and they raced into a two-goal lead with their first two chances. Four minutes into the game, a ball into the box was cleared by Carmona but only found Yeremi, who ruthlessly dispatched. Minutes later, things went from bad to worse as Buchanan played a pass into Pape Gueye, who made it 2-0. Gueye could have had another shortly after but Ferllo blocked his shot with his chest.

Ramón Martínez scored his first goal for the club late on

With a mountain to climb, bit by bit, we tried to claw our way back into the game. With 15 minutes played, García Pascual had a chance from a Pedrosa cross but he couldn't find the finish. With half an hour played a great cross from Suso picked out Sow in the box, who crashed in a header. However, with five minutes to go before half-time, Villarreal restored their two-goal cushion with a fine individual strike from Baena to make it 3-1. In the added time, Suso and Sow could have reduced the deficit again, but neither of the two opportunities resulted in a goal. At the start of the second half Lukebakio came on for Sow.

The Belgian nearly made an instant impact after coming on - rattling the crossbar with a curling strike but Villarreal only needed a counter-attack with a pass from Barry and a great finish from Pape Gueye to score their team's fourth. Caparrós made further change as Ramón Martínez and Peque came on. The game ended with Ramón Martínez's first goal for the first team popping up with five minutes to play and volleying in from the edge of the area. Lukebakio then scored barely a minute later only to see the goal disallowed for a very tight offside goal - as we finished the 2024/25 season with defeat.
