On Thursday, the Club Advisory Platform, organised by the Big European Leagues, came together to debate, amongst other topics, the European Super League. The event, which La Liga hosted both in person and on-line, brought together 300 clubs from around Europe. Representing Sevilla FC were Club President José Castro and Deputy Director Jesús Arroyo.

José Castro made the most of the occasion to congratulate Villarreal CF on winning the UEFA Europa League and spoke about the European Super League: 'La Liga is our Super League. It is getting bigger and bigger and stronger and stronger. The Super League is a closed league for the select few and is not good for the very large majority. Our league is the Spanish one, the league that allows us to qualify for European football and win the most UEFA Europa Leagues in history. And we all have the opportunity to be there based on our own effort.

'The Super League does not respect the essence of football or a meritocracy'

Regarding the possible sanctions to the clubs who remain in it, Castro said 'these decisions will be made by UEFA and their Committee and they will do as they see fit, but obviously the rules go for everyone. The Super League does not interest the majority of clubs. There are a lot of clubs in Spain and we have to be united against what is only good for the few, not the many. That is not the essence of football or a meritocracy. You have to respect the first point of sport which is self-improvement and achieving goals off your own effort - that would not exist in the Super League. Everything can be improved and we are working on that, but we will not achieve that with this nonsense.

Castro finished by discussing that no Sevilla FC players had made it into Luis Enrique's list for the Euros: 'The season our team just put in maybe should have received more recognition by the coach. Not only Jesús Navas, Jordán and Suso put in great seasons... but he makes the call and you have to respect that.'
