We are delighted to announce that Diego Alonso has reached an agreement for the Uruguayan to become our new coach until the end of the current season. Alonso arrives in Nervión with his most recent experience as coach of the Uruguay national team. His coaching career began at Club Atlético Bella Vista in 2011, where he won nine of 25 games. From there, he moved to Club Guaraní in Paraguay, where he was in charge for almost fifty games between the 2012 and 2013 Clausura and Apertura seasons, with 25 wins and eleven losses.

He then moved back to his home country for the next two seasons, at Peñarol and Olimpia respectively, with six matches at the former and 30 at the latter. He achieved a near 50% win rate, with 14 wins, while in Olimpia. Alonso then moved once again, this time to Mexico, where he coached Pachuca from 2015 to 2018, achieving the best results of his coaching career. At the Mexican club, he managed a total of 173 matches, with 74 wins, 46 draws, and 53 losses. He also lifted two titles: the national Clausura championship in 2016 and the CONCACAF Champions League in 2017, the top continental title in CONCACAF.

The Uruguayan's success continued in Mexico for two more seasons at Monterrey, where he managed 72 more matches between 2018 and 2019. With Monterrey, he also secured his second CONCACAF Champions League title in 2019.

In 2020, he moved to the United States to coach Inter Miami. Most recently Alonso was appointed as coach of the Uruguay national team, where he secured qualification for the 2022 Qatar World Cup after winning four consecutive games. At the tournament, Uruguay were eliminated in the group stage, after finishing on four points.

Diego Alonso will conduct his first training session this evening, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the training ground.
