Another three vital points were picked up as we claimed a 2-0 victory at Las Palmas in a game that was turned on its head early on when Saúl Coco was shown a straight red card. Youssef En-Nesyri's powerful header made it 1-0 just before half time. The home side put up a fight in the second half before Dodi Lukébakio's injury-time goal made sure of the result.
Only three minutes had passed when perhaps the most decisive move of the game took place. Isaac put Gudelj in behind, who was then brought down by Saúl Coco as he raced towards Escandell's goal. Muñiz Ruiz opted for a yellow card, but was soon advised by VAR Pizarro Gómez that the action deserved to be reviewed. Coco was shown a red card and Las Palmas had to play the rest of the game with ten men. However, Quique stuck to the original gameplan and the team remained patient, with first clear chance coming via Isaac's deflected shot midway through the first half.
A clinical counter-attack sealed all three points in Gran Canaria
With the numerical disadvantage, Las Palmas struggled to make any clear-cut opportunities. Meanwhile, Ramos had an effort on goal before Isaac went through one-on-one against home keeper Escandell, but our 23-year-old striker could only skew his shot wide. The deadlock was finally broken on the stroke of half time courtesy of a brilliant En-Nesyri header. Gudelj whipped in a cross from the left-hand side for the Moroccan to head into the bottom corner, leaving no chance for Escandell. Isaac came close to extending our lead early into the second half, but his shot flew across the face of goal, just out of En-Nesyri's reach at the far post.
Looking for a route back into the game, Las Palmas started to press forward, leaving opportunities for En-Nesyri and Lukébakio, who came on for Isaac, to get in behind. Our former player Sandro had the best of the home side's chances, having a go from distance twice. His first effort whistled past the post before he tested Nyland with a free kick. With only ten minutes left on the clock, En-Nesyri had the ball in the back of the net for the second time of the afternoon, only to be denied by the offside flag. However the three points were ultimately secured deep into added time, Lukébakio tapping in at the back post after great build-up play from En-Nesyri and Agoumé on the counter-attack. Back-to-back away wins take us nine points clear of the relegation zone with seven games left to play. Next up is a home match against RCD Mallorca on Monday 22 April which Kike Salas will miss through suspension having picked up a yellow card in Gran Canaria.
