Our good run of form came to an end today in stoppage time at La Cerámica. In a match where we went ahead twice, the hosts struck a late blow by finding a winner in the dying seconds of the game.
Youssef En-Nesyri gave us the lead from the penalty spot, but soon after, Alexander Sørloth equalised during a first half in which our Moroccan forward bagged a brace to put us 2-1 ahead via a great header. After the break, Yerson Mosquera brought Villarreal level once again with six minutes left of normal time, before Sørloth went on to clinch the winner. En-Nesyri scored a brace with a fine header in the first half.
We started the game dealing well with a strong wave of pressure from a Villarreal side who were managing to play high up the pitch. Within the first fifteen minutes, Ørjan Nyland made a good low save to block to Álex Baena's first shot on goal from a long way out of the area. After containing the home side who threatened for most of the first quarter of the match, Quique Sánchez Flores' men began to create the first chances of the game. In one of our first dangerous chances, Lucien Agoumé claimed a penalty wrestling for the ball with Sørloth in the area and the VAR ruling that Suso's rebound hit Kiko Femenía's hand. From the spot, En-Nesyri made no mistake, with his shot going to Filip Jörgensen's left.
En-Nesyri, with a brace in the first half, looked as though he had secured the victory
However, our joy was short-lived when Sørloth equalised just five minutes after the opening goal with a great header that Nyland could not reach. After the equaliser, we came out fighting as Ocampos just mistimed his bicycle kick and could not latch onto Jesús Navas's on the right flank. As the first half came to an end, Navas himself sent another cross from the by-line into the heart of the box, which En-Nesyri headed into the back of the net with a precise header after rising higher than his opponents to give us the edge going into the break.
The second half started with a clearcut chance created between Sørloth and Álex Baena in which Nyland came out on top against the Spanish striker's effort. Our response in an uncontrolled start to the second half came from the boots of Ocampos in a move which saw the Argentine managed to find space in the opposition box to connect with En-Nesyri a cross that the Moroccan striker scuffed with his heel. With Marcos Acuña forced off through injury, Quique turned to the bench, refreshing the ideas without altering the formation through the introduction of Pedrosa. Marcelino's team sought desperately for an equaliser, trying to surprise on more than one occasion from distance, but the ever-attentive Nyland kept their efforts out. Near the end of normal time, Mosquera took advantage of a good first touch from a cross by Terrats to equalise. In the ensuing action, we quickly recovered, with En-Nesyri hitting the post with another great header.
The referee then awarded us a penalty, but VAR then overturned the onfield decision. In extra time, the VAR again played a key role in cancelling out a goal awarded to Ramon Terrats. With the game entering a chaotic period in which both teams tried to find the winning goal on the counter, Sørloth dealt the decisive blow by heading into the top corner of Nyland's goal in the last move of the game, despite calls for a foul to be given against the Norwegian attacker on Kike Salas. The result thus ends a run of four consecutive away matches without defeat away as we now prepare to host Cádiz CF next Wednesday at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán at 19:30 CEST.
