Europa League Round of 16

20 March 2014

Estadio Benito Villamarín

With fate having seen us draw against our city neighbours in the Round of 16 in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League, in the first leg at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán it was a nightmare start. A header from Léo Baptistão inside the opening 15 minutes followed by a Salva Sevilla goal in the second half gave us a mountain to climb in the second leg. With a travelling support of more than 3,000 Sevillistas in the away end, a goal midway through the first half from José Antonio Reyes gave hope. As the clock ticked on we pushed for another goal to level the tie on aggregate and eventually it would come as Alberto Moreno whipped in a cross that Carlos Bacca got on the end with 15 minutes to play to send the game into extra time. Neither side could make the breakthrough in the additional 30 minutes and so it would come down to a penalty shootout to decide who progress. Vitolo stepped up first and in an agonising moment saw his penalty saved. The next six penalties were converted until Alfred N'Diaye then missed to give a lifeline. Ivan Rakitic kept his nerve and then Nono couldn’t find the back to spark wild celebrations from the players and away end and spark a magical run all the way to the 2014 Europa League final in Turin where Benfica would be beaten on penalties to bring yet another European trophy home.
