Standings
After finishing 4th last season, the first time they had finished outside of the LaLiga top three since the 2011/12 season, Atlético find themselves in 3rd place on 57 points after fighting for the league title for much of the season. However, a recent run of no wins in three in the league has left them nine points behind Barcelona with nine games left to play. To compound a difficult month, they were also knocked out of the Champions League on penalties by their Real Madrid in the Round of 16 and earlier this week they lost to Barcelona in the semi final of the Copa del Rey,

Key player: Jan Oblak
The Slovenia goalkeeper is now in his 11th season in Madrid and has been ever-present behind the sticks for Simeone'’s side, clocking up over 484 career appearances for Los Colchoneros (the Mattress Makers) and is the squad’s vice-captain. A clean sheet machine his 12 so far this season are the joint highest in the league alongside Real Sociedad’s Álex Remiro – with the 23 goals conceded by Atlético in 28 league games so far this season also unsurprisingly the fewest in the division. His 3,450 minutes played in all competitions this season is the highest by over 400 minutes from the next highest by an Atlético player (Antoine Griezmann), showing just how trusted a right-hand man he is for Simione.
Coach: Diego Simeone
Diego Simeone enjoyed a 19-year playing career that took him from his native Argentina to Italy and Spain where he played for the likes of Pisa, Sevilla, Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan and Lazio. He also made more than 100 appearances for his country, winning two Copa América titles. He began his managerial career with Racing Club after retiring and went onto to manage Estudiantes, River Plate and San Lorenzo winning the Argentine Primera División with both the former and the later. He made the managerial move to Europe with Catania in 2011 and then in December moved to former club Atlético Madrid as a manager where he has enjoyed remarkable success winning two La Liga titles, two UEFA Europa Leagues and two UEFA Super Cups, as well as twice reaching the Champions League final twice. Simeone is the longest serving manager in La Liga and the second-longest in Europe’s top five leagues.

Classic meeting
Copa del Rey final
19 May 2010
Camp Nou
Having overcome two-legged ties against Atlético Ciudad, Barcelona, Deportivo La Coruña and Getafe we would face Atlético in the cup final in Barcelona. With Antonio Álvarez in the dugout, we made a dream start as a blocked shot from Jesús Navas fell to Diego Capel on the edge of the box who fired in a rocket from distance. In a cagey final neither team could find a way past the other until the clock ticked into injury in the 91st minute as intercepted the ball on the halfway line and raced clear, before keeping his cool to slot past David de Gea to give us our fifth Copa del Rey title.
