History

Real Madrid, founded in 1902 as Madrid Football Club, are one of Spain’s most successful clubs. Granted the “Real” (royal) title by King Alfonso XIII in 1920 they are one of three founding members of LaLiga to never have been relegated together with Athletic Club and Barcelona. Real Madrid have won a record number of domestic and European titles, including 36 La Liga and 15 Champions League trophies. Owned by its members, Real Madrid were the first club in Europe’s top 5 leagues to win 100 trophies across all competitions.

Standings

After winning LaLiga by ten points last season, Real Madrid have been unable to defend their league crown after Barcelona wrapped up the league title in midweek with victory against Espanyol to give the Catalan side a seven-point lead with two games to go. Real Madrid come into the game on 78 points from 36 games with a 4-3 defeat in El Clásico last weekend proving a key in their title ambitions.
