SIGHTS SET ON FIRST CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WIN THIS SEASON

The match

Sevilla FC vs Borussia Dortmund, the third match of the Champions League group stage, is to be played at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Wednesday evening. The third meeting in Sevilla between the two in European competition. The first was played in the group stage of the 2010/11 Europa League with a 2-2 draw, with goals from Kagawa and Subotic for the German side and Romaric and Kanouté to equalise the match for Sevilla. The other meeting was two seasons ago, in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, with a 2-3 win for Dortmund. Suso, De Jong, Haaland (scoring twice) and Dahoud scored the goals.

The standings

Dortmund are second on three points after losing in Manchester - they opened with a home win over Copenhagen - while Sevilla are level with the Danes on one point. If Dortmund win tonight and Copenhagen fail to do the same in England, they will be in second place at the halfway stage of the group stage.

Team news

Julen Lopetegui has not yet announced the squad for the game, although at his press conference he ruled out the inclusion of Marcão, who only returned to training a matter of days ago. The injured Rekik will also be absent. For the away side, Terzic is without one of his most important players, Marco Reus, while centre-back Mat Hummels has stayed in Germany with a cold. As expected, Marius Wolf, Mahmoud Dahoud, Giovanni Reyna and Spaniard Mateo Morey will also be absent due to various injuries.

Past players

There are no former Sevilla players at Dortmund and the only Spaniard in the squad, Morey, is injured. However, the home side do have two former Dortmund players. Firstly there is Thomas Delaney, who in fact played in the knock-out stages two seasons ago for Dortmund. The Dane spent three seasons at Dortmund, while his new team-mate Adnan Januzaj was with them briefly in the second half of the 2015/16 season, at the age of just 21.

Opposition form

Dortmund went into last weekend's league match with a chance of finishing top, but were beaten in Cologne and ended the weekend in fourth place. They could even have finished outside the Champions League spots, but the losses for Monchengladbach and Hoffenheim prevented them from doing so. In eight games they have five wins and three defeats.

Match officials

Italian referee Maurizio Mariani will oversee proceedings. He is in his first season in European club competitions and has just officiated the match between Real Madrid and RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabeu, his only experience so far refereeing clubs from both countries. Frenchman Jerome Brisard will be in charge of the VAR.
