Youssef En-Nesyri wants to be an important figure in the club's mission to clim up the table in what has been a difficult season thus far. The Moroccan international has taken a clear step forward and has helped Sevilla collect nine of out of a possible twelve points in the last four games of LaLiga Santander. The stats speak volumes about the attacker, who on Saturday against Elche was determined to open the scoring and secure a must-win fixture for Sampaoli's side. En-Nesyri has displayed a goalscoring streak in the league competition, something which has not been forthcoming earlier in the season.

In other competitions it is far to say that En-Nesyri knew where the goal was. Interestingly, until the league season paused for the World Cup, the only competition the man from Fes had scored in this season was the Champions League. He scored in two home games in the group stage, and in the other home fixture against Manchester City he was kept on the bench. Against Dortmund, he scored the only goal in a disappointing loss, yet when we welcomed Copenhagen, he scored the first of three goals in a convincing victory. These were the only two goals he scored in the first half of the season, where he played for 658 minutes, and so averaged a goal every 329 minutes

After starring for Morocco in Qatar, his goalscoring record has improved drastically

Fortunately, that all changed in Qatar, where En-Nesyri was the first-choice striker for coach Walid Regragui. His goal against Canada in the group stage gave him confidence and he went on to make history for his country, scoring the winner against Portugal to book a historic place in the semi-finals of the World Cup with a splendid header. En-Nesyri, who returned home after a well-earned fourth place finish at the World Cup, has been much more accurate in front of goal. January has been the month of his comeback on the goalscoring front. So much so that in the first game of the year, he scored more goals than he accumulated in the initial part of the season in 2022.

Three of the five goals that helped to eliminate Linares Deportivo were scored by the Moroccan, who also managed to score last Wednesday at El Sadar in stoppage time to force the game into extra time. He still has unfinished business in La Liga, and he scored twice on Saturday against Elche. The first was a header, a speciality of his, and the other with an unmistakable right-footed shot. Six goals in 463 minutes of 2023, an average of one goal every 77 minutes, or in other words, more than a goal per match. A rejuvenated En-Nesyri who has made his commitment to the club clear and who wants to continue to add to his tally since arriving at the club just three years ago. So far, he has played 129 official matches and scored 41 goals with the club.
