Sevilla FC has claimed almost a third of its total points this season in LaLiga Santander in the month of April alone. The 15 points we have got from the five matches this month, makes up for 30.7% of the total we have got for the whole season (41). This has meant Jose Louis Mendilibar's men have all but effectively secured that they will not be relegated, albeit this is still mathematically possible. No other team has claimed more points this month than our side, who last night defeated a side that could have bettered our total for this month. Sevilla has claimed the most points out of any LaLiga side with 13, one more than Atlétuco and three more than Girona, Athletic and Osasuna. We have claimed four more than Real Madrid and Villarreal, five more than Barcelona and Mallorca, and six more than Almería, Rayo, Valencia Real Sociedad and Valladolid. Many of these are clubs who we have overtaken in the last few days.
All of this has been achieved in a month with a new coach and a side that has had to play three of their five league games away from home, in very difficult places like the Nuevo Mirandilla, the Mestalla and San Mamés. Not only did the side claim all nine points from these fixtures, but the squad was able to keep a clean sheet in each of these matches too. It's never easy winning three consecutive away matches, it matches the record of the club in the First Division, and it's even more difficult to not concede a goal. Interestingly, the only other team in the league to have won three consecutive away matches in a row is Barcelona, who defeated Sevilla, Cádiz and Mallorca away from home between match weeks 4 and 7.
To find the last time the Sevillista team achieved this, you have to go back no less than 28 months, to December 2020. Back then, midway through the 2020/21 season, they managed back-to-back wins at Huesca, Getafe and Valencia, another nine out of nine with identical 1-0 scorelines in those matches. What has now been achieved, despite having the same prize in terms of points, is a step further, as in addition to not conceding, five goals have been scored, compared to three on that occasion. If Sevilla FC win in Valladolid on 14 May, with the European spots on the line, and do so with a clean sheet, it will be a milestone in their history in the top flight, but there are still many important matches to come.
