August 28 marks 16 years since the loss of Antonio Puerta. This year's anniversary is especially poignant because 16 is of course the special squad number he wore while delighting so many Sevilla fans up and down the left flank. In his memory, as part of an annual tradition, the squad laid flowers by his statue at Ciudad Deportiva José Ramón Cisneros Palacios.
Alongside the coaching staff and first-team squad, president, José Castro, was joined by vice-presidents, José María del Nido Carrasco and Fernando Carrión, as well as sporting director, Víctor Orta. Castro and captain, Jesús Navas - who played alongside Puerta - laid a bouquet which spelt out 'Zurda de Diamantes' (Diamond on the Left) in honour of the late winger who remains so cherished by the club.
