Jesús Navas started Spain's 3-1 away victory against Cyprus. After manager Luis de la Fuente handed him the captaincy on the night of his 50th international cap, the right-back played 66 minutes as Spain recorded another European Championship qualifying victory, with their place at the tournament already confirmed.
Goals from Yamal, Oyarzabal and Joselu secured the win for the Spanish national team despite Cyprus scoring a second-half consolation. Navas, who was replaced by Carvajal with just over an hour played, became the first Sevilla player to wear the Spain captain's armband in an official fixture after Marcelo Campana led the side in friendlies in 1955 and 1957.
