6-0: A HISTORIC VICTORY IN THE WOMEN'S GRAN DERBI

On a crisp winter’s evening, footballing fanatics from across the city gathered at the Estadio Jesús Navas for El Gran Derbi in Liga F. Cristian Toro’s side returned from the international break in style and disposed off our biggest rivals in an unforgettable chapter in the history of the women’s team.

The home side started brightly and won their first corner in the sixth minute, which amounted in little except the awarding of a free kick. Rosa Otermin fired it into the box and found Klara Cahynova, who headed it into the back of the net at the far post. Betis were quick to respond as Carolina Férez went straight down other end, but her shot was blasted wide from close range.

However, it was Toro’s players who continued to dominate, with Toni Payne proving a particular threat on the right-hand side. Otermin played another fantastic ball into Cristina Martín-Prieto on the edge of the penalty area and crossed it into Inma Gabarro, but the striker was unable to release the shot. Just minutes later, Payne again found herself in a dangerous position, storming forward to the byline, before cutting it back to Sampedro who smashed it high from the edge of the box and into the goal.

Gabarro and Sampedro continued to bombard the box, but Paula Vizoso established some control around her goal. Betis eventually grew back into the game following the second goal and enjoyed more possession for a period, but failed to create any clear-cut chances. The main chance came courtesy of a free kick just outside the penalty area, which hit the bar and forced a double save from Esther Sullastres.

Following the break, Martín-Prieto found herself through on goal straight from kick off, and Payne in the same situation two minutes later, but Vizoso was able to save the visitors’ blushes on both occasions. Betis’s first chance of the half came after five minutes, but we quickly regained possession and Gabarro played a fine pass to Martín-Prieto who slotted home our third. The goal put the game out of reach for Betis, who were scarcely able to move out of their own half for the remainder of the game.

The final ten minutes saw an onslaught on the Betis goal as Otermin firstly once again put Martín-Prieto within goalscoring distance, only for effort to be saved by Vizoso. Yet, within a minute, it seemed that Gabarro had put the final nail in the coffin when she met substitute Debora García’s cross to add a fourth to the score-line. Just two minutes later though, the Betis defence had their backs against the wall again and a failed clearance struck Martín-Prieto and deflected back into the goal, adding a fifth to the score-line, sparking a rapturous reception from the crowd.

Finally, Gabarro added her second and the team’s sixth, stunning our rivals and leaping ahead of them in the table. We now sit in 7th and will hope to keep the wind in our sail for when we travel up to the capital to face Real Madrid.
