Sevilla FC Women claimed their first away win since 7 January by beating Villarreal CF 2-1. Cristian Toro's side had to dig deep and take their chances to earn all three points at a tough ground.
They started the first half with the clear intention of controlling possession, Toni Payne proving effective on the wing and captain Amanda Sampedro, who was recalled to the starting lineup, running the midfield. The first clear chance of the match fell to the home side before Inma Gabarro tried her luck from distance, forcing Carmen Carbonell into a very good save. With a couple of other half chances before half time not proving fruitful, the teams entered the changing rooms with the game still goalless.
The second half followed a very different story as both sides battled to seize the initiative. Mckenna scored for the hosts early in the second half before Inma Gabarro struck back just two minutes later to level the scores. Payne's accurate cross from the right found Gabarro in the six-yard box. She made no mistake, volleying low into the net. Sevilla FC Women were spurred on by the equaliser and turned the game on its head in the 73rd minute. Rosa Otermín showed nerves of steel having just entered the field of play to convert a penalty into the bottom-right corner. The referee pointed to the spot following a handball by Ainoa Campo.
They responded well to fightback and claim an important victory away from home
Cristian Toro's side continued to push forward in pursuit of a third and could have found it through top scorer Cristina Martín-Prieto. She found some space on the edge of the box and shot powerfully towards the Villarreal goal. However she was denied by Carbonell, who also saved the follow-up effort. Ultimately, it did not matter as Sevilla FC Women held on to claim an important victory away from home. Next up is a home match against Levante UD next Saturday as they look to regain sixth place in the league.
