The club are delighted to announce Rubén Estephan Vargas Martínez as our first signing of the January transfer window. The forward 26-year-old, who arrived this morning, has signed has contract to keep him in Nervión until 2029.

Originally from Adligenswil, Switzerland he came through the academy at FC Luzern. He made his reserve team debut at 16 and then aged 19 made his first team team in the Swiss Super League debut against FC Zurich. Playing across the first and reserve teams, he made a total of 20 appearances during the 2017/18 season scoring once. The following season he played 38 games, scoring ten goals, contributing nine assists and making his European debut in the Europa League playoff round against Olympiacos.

His performance earned him a move to the Bundesliga side FC Augsburg in the summer of 2019. In five full seasons in Germany, he played a total of 161 games scoring 23 goals and providing 19 assists, his last goal coming in the DFB Pokal against Karlsruhe in December.

Born to a Dominican father and Swiss mother, Vargas made his debut for Switzerland at Under-20 level just before making his debut with Luzern's first team. He went on to play for the Under-21s and then in September 2019 was rewarded with his full senior international debut in a Euro 2020 qualifier against Gibraltar. Two months later, he scored his first international goal, coincidentally also against Gibraltar. In total, he has 50 appearances for Switerzland, for whom he has scored eight goals and made eight assists. He played for Switzerland at Euro 2020 where they were eliminated on penalties by Spain in the quarter-finals. He also took part in all of his country's matches at the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Euros. In the round of 16, he was awarded the Man of the Match after scoring and assisting against Italy.
