TEN YEARS SINCE GLASGOW: SEVILLA CONSOLIDATE EUROPEAN GLORY AND PALOP SECURES LEGENDARY STATUS

Andrés Palop wrote himself into Sevilla FC folklore ten years ago today with a man-of-the-match performance as Sevilla beat Espanyol on penalties to retain the UEFA cup in Glasgow.

The goalkeeper denied Espanyol three times from the penalty spot to see Sevilla crowned back-to-back winners after winning the penalty shoot-out 3-1 at Hampden Park.

It had finished 2-2 at the end of extra time after Sevilla had taken the lead through Adriano on 18 minutes before Espanyol responded via Albert Riera ten minutes later. 

Moisés Hurtado was then sent off for the Catalan side on 68 mintues for a second yellow card but Sevilla could not make the numerical advantage count as Swiss referee Massio Bussaca blew for full time with the sides level.

But Freddie Kanouté handed Los Nervionenses the lead 15 minutes into extra time, only for Jônatas Domingos to salvage an equaliser for Ernesto Valverde's side with five minutes to go.

Penalties came and Kanouté got Sevilla off to the perfect start with an assured strike before Palop made the first of his saves to deny Luis García with a low save to his right.

Ivica Dragutinović scored Sevilla's second spot kick and Walter Pandiana replicated, before Dani Alves fired Sevilla's third over the crossbar and Palop denied Jônatas with another low stop, this time to his left.

Antonio Puerta found the bottom left hand corner to dispatch Sevilla's fourth, before Palop stopped Marc Torrejón's effort with a diving save to his right to hand Juande Ramos' side a second consecutive European success.
