SERGI GÓMEZ: 'I'M ENJOYING BEING ABLE TO PLAY SO MANY MINUTES'

The centre-back, who is keeping his feet on the ground despite being the most-played player this season, discussed his good start to the season with SFC Radio

Sergi Gómez was interviewed this Tuesday on SFC Radio's 'Sólo el Sevilla', going over how things are currently and evaluating the season so far: 'It's strange to have a week without any matches, but football never stops. Although there were fewer players, we trained with the same intensity, working on different aspects and waiting for the internationals.' That said, Gonalons will be out with his latest injury: 'It's a shame because he was recovering and we sent him all of our best wishes. He's a great person as well as player and it's a real pity.' And as football never stops, it is now time to turn attentions towards Valladolid: 'They've shown in many matches that they have the team to compete. When you're a newly promoted side you have the desire to show you belong and we've seen that. They know that every match is a test so that people realise they deserve to be up there.'

Speaking more personally, he evaluated his first months In the club: 'I'm happy, I'm enjoying the good start to the season and want it to continue. When the chance to come here presented itself I didn't think twice as I knew the history of this club and that I would be with big players. I knew that we would be playing with three centre-backs and as soon as I arrived I was playing. I'm happy to have played so many minutes.' With so many injuries in the defence, the Catalan is becoming a fixture in the back three: 'It's down to circumstances. We've had a lot of injuries to defenders and we haven't been able to rotate much. I'm happy with the work I'm doing to prevent any injuries that could stop me from playing.'

In any case, Sergi is not getting carried away: 'We never know what can happen. If I arrived and got injured on the first day it would have been a different story. I know where I come from and what it took me to get here. That means that when something good comes around, you give everything and more so that it doesn't get away. Working every day is key because you don't get anywhere without consistency.' Nothing surprised him upon his arrival at the club, except the dressing room: 'It's just as I had imagined, but the great atmosphere in the dressing room surprised me. It's an amazing group of teammates that help you every day.'

To conclude, he spoke about the significance of Pablo Machín. 'He's a demanding manager who always looks for the best version of yourself and stops you from getting too relaxed. He adds intensity and enthusiasm to every training exercise so that everyone serves and forms part of a methodical coaching staff, and so that everyone analyses the matches closely. This provides you with data that may seem insignificant, but can actually decide the outcome of matches.'
