PROMES: CRUCIAL IN PUSHING THE NETHERLANDS TO THE NATIONS LEAGUE FINAL

Though he didn't start, Quincy Promes was crucial in pushing the Netherlands to a UEFA Nations League final this Thursday night in Portugal. Turning the game on its head when coming on from the bench, Promes would force two goals - first capitalising on a mistake from John Stones to force a Kyle Walker own goal, then striking the decisive blow to put the Netherlands 3-1 up in extra time. 

With England having put themselves ahead after half an hour of play, the Netherlands needed to look to the bench to change their fortunes in their UEFA Nations League semi-final. Promes would come on for Ryan Babel on 68 minutes and would immediately cause danger for the England defence. Forcing a corner that would see De Ligt head home to level the scores, the match would go to extra time after a late Jesse Lingard goal was ruled out for offside.  

With nerves high, England would play themselves into trouble after the restart - Kyle Walker deflecting Promes' shot to put the Netherlands into the lead. In the second-half of extra-time, Promes would seal victory with the Netherlands' third goal, after Memphis Depay selflessly assisted for a comfortable finish for the Sevillista.  

The Netherlands will now play in the final of the UEFA Nations League this Sunday against hosts Portugal. Kickoff is at 20:45 CEST, and after tonight's impressive display from Promes, it would be no surprise to see the Sevillista in the starting lineup.
