Looking back over the season and evaluating it happens all the time in football. After yesterday's victory in the Son Moix, Sevilla FC have pretty much finished the first half of the season in the best possible manner. That is, that they sit third in the league table and went through their Europa League group with ease. Although it's a long season and there's a long way to go, the signs at this stage of the season are good.
One of the most impressive things this season has been the team's away record. Where this year they have been able to win many a game away from home, in previous seasons they have found it almost impossible. Without going too much further, Julen Lopetegui's men have accumulated more points away from home than any other team in La Liga. 20 of their 34 points have come away from home; which is four more than Real Madrid, and six more than FC Barcelona. Real Sociedad are alongside Barcelona on this table by having accumulated 14 points away from home this season.
Since the 2014/15 season, where they went seven away games unbeaten, they haven't managed five unbeaten in a row until now
Out of ten league away outings, there have been six wins: Espanyol, Granada, Alavés, Betis, Valladolid and Mallorca; two draws: Valencia and Osasuna; and two defeats: Eibar and Barcelona. Taking this into account, Sevilla have now won more league away games this season than they did in the whole of last season. With half a season played in the 2018/19 and 2017/18 seasons, they had won three away games. At this stage of the 2016/17, they had won five and, finally and most shockingly, they didn't win a single away game in the whole of the 2015/16 league campaign.
Funnily enough, we have to go back to the 2014/15 season to find the last time that Sevilla FC went five league away games unbeaten, a record that they achieved after the win in Mallorca. Since they fell to defeat at the Camp Nou, they drew in the Mestalla, won in the Villamarín and Zorrilla, drew in El Sadar and now, won in the Son Moix. With Unai Emery in charge during the 2014/15 season, they went on a run of seven league away games unbeaten (curiously, their last seven away games of the season).
