Sevilla FC will celebrate its 130th anniversary on Saturday, performing strongly in a 21st century where it is demonstrating that it is forever young, something which is reflected in the campaign that the club has designed for such a big anniversary. Despite the passing of time, far from falling into a decline as time wore on, Sevilla FC finds itself in a moment of brilliance, looking forward to a rejuvenated future with ambitious plans in the medium and long-term, just as strong as it was in the beginning, with the same winning mentality that helped the club become the best team in Southern Spain, with unquestionable dominance in the Andalusian Cup and its successes in the cup and league.
FOREVER YOUNG, SEVILLA FC'S MESSAGE TO CELEBRATE ITS 130TH ANNIVERSARY
Born on 25th January 1890, Sevilla FC quickly became the strongest team in Andalusia, winning 17 of the 20 editions of the Andalusian Cup between 1915 and 1940. The team from Nervión, who started in the second tier, were promoted in 1933/34 and underwent massive growth in the next two decades, winning three cups and a league title, as well as finishing runners-up three times. With a new stadium bearing the name of its most important president, Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, Sevilla FC began the second half of the 20th century in a delicate financial position, which saw them drop into the second tier at the end of the 60s, and were unable to fully escape until the second half of the 70s.
The final 25 years of the 20th century had it all, qualifying for Europe, memorable nights such as the match against PAOK, and an administrative relegation which caused an institutional crisis, sending the club to the second tier. The club began the 21st century there, with the level-headed Roberto Alés as president. With an economic project that focused on keeping the purse strings tight, as well as Monchi's eye for talent and Joaquín Caparrós in charge of the team, Alés got it right and opened the way for, possibly, Sevilla FC's best era, with the presidencies of José María del Nido and José Castro, qualifying for Europe 15 times in the last 16 seasons, five UEFA Europa Leagues, two Copa del Reys, a UEFA Super Cup, a Spanish Super Cup, and playing in 18 cup finals in a golden era, which still continues today.
Sevilla FC will have the opportunity to celebrate this 130th anniversary on Saturday by hosting Granada CF at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán at 21:00. The side will wear a special edition shirt, bearing a commemorative badge. This shirt can be bought from the day of the game, until 1st February, for 59.95 euros.
