Sevilla FC now know their opponent's for next Friday's final, their sixth UEFA Europa League final. It will be against Antonio Conte's Inter, and will take place in Cologne (Germany). The Nerazzurri will be the eighth Italian side that have played against the Blanquirrojos in a European tie.
SEVILLA FC HAVE WON THEIR LAST THREE KNOCKOUT TIES AGAINST ITALIAN OPPOSITION
In fact, the Andalusians have won three out of four knockout ties against Italian sides and, curiously, they have won their last three. The first of those three came against Fiorentina in the UEFA Europa League semi final in 2014/15, where Sevilla would win 6-2 on aggregate, with a convincing 3-0 home win in the first leg (Aleix Vidal (2) and Gameiro) before winning 2-0 in Florence with goals from Bacca and Carriço.
The next tie was last season's UEFA Europa league Round of 16 match against Lazio. Ben Yedder scored the only goal of the game in the Italian capital, and he netted again in the second leg in Sevilla, with Sarabia adding another to secure a 3-0 aggregate win.
The most recent tie took place less than two weeks ago. It was another UEL Round of 16 tie, but this time they faced Roma. The pandemic had caused the fixture to be postponed and the format to be changed, meaning the match was a one-off tie at a neutral venue, the MSV Arena in Duisburg. The Nervionenses progressed with goals from Reguilón and En-Nesyri.
The only knockout tie where the Andalusians have fallen against Italian opposition came in the UEFA Cup Round of 16 in 2004/05, where Parma would win 1-0 on aggregate thanks to a goal from Ennio Tardini.
Matches against Juve and Sampdoria took place in the group stages, and AC Milan were the opponents in the 2007 UEFA Super Cup
The Blanquirrojos have played against a further three Italian sides, but not in direct knockout ties. The most recent of these opponents is Juventus. In 2015/16, a Fernando Llorente goal was enough to secure a win against the side from Turin in the Champions League group stages. However, the Bianconeri won the reverse fixture in Italy with goals from Morata and Zaga. The following season, curiously, they faced each other at the same stage. Sevilla picked up a point in the away fixture with a goalless draw, but Juventus won 3-1 in Nervión.
Sampdoria were also paired with Sevilla in the group stage of the 2008/09 UEFA Cup, which saw teams only play against each other once. A late goal from Bottinelli meant that the Andalusians fell to a 1-0 defeat in Genoa.
The final team in this list is AC Milan, who were the opponents in the 2007 UEFA Super Cup. The match took place amidst difficult circumstances after Antonio Puerta had passed away just days before. His teammates were unable to win the cup for him, despite the fact that Renato had given Sevilla the lead. The Rossoneri came from behind and won with goals from Inzaghi, Jankuovski and Kaká.
