The 2019/20 season was brought to a close last week in the best possible way, as Sevilla FC beat Inter to win their sixth UEFA Europa League title. Julen Lopetegui's men broke many club records during the season, particularly regarding their strength in defence. This season, they conceded just 45 goals in 54 official matches.
With these numbers, the Blanquirrojos conceded 0.83 goals per game, a ratio that has not been beaten since 2006/07, when the squad conceded just 0.78 goals per game after 63 matches, the season that the side won the UEFA Super Cup, UEFA Cup and Copa del Rey.
The fewest goals conceded in a season since 2001/02, when they conceded 42 in their 39 matches
This means that it is the second best season for Sevilla FC this century, conceding less than a goal a game for the first time since 2008/09, when they conceded 51 goals in their 52 matches. The 45 goals conceded this season is the least they have conceded since the 2001/02 season, when they conceded 42. These goals came in just 39 games, 38 in LaLiga and one in the Copa del Rey.
Since the last promotion to LaLiga, they have only achieved a ratio of one goal conceded per game or less: 54-54 in 2004/05, 55-49 in 2005/06, and the aforementioned 2006/07 and 2008/09 seasons, in addition to this season. The 26 clean sheets this season, nearly one every two games, also reflects the solid defence that Julen Lopetegui has at his disposal, creating a wall that is very difficult to break down.
