José Castro spoke at Éver Banega's farewell event on Friday at the Sánchez-Pizjuán. The Club President wanted to highlight, above all else, the commitment of the Argentine, who brought his second spell at Sevilla to a close by lifting silverware. Castro said the following:
CASTRO: "WE HAVE TO FEEL LUCKY TO HAVE ENJOYED THE BEST YEARS OF HIS CAREER"
"Today is one of those days that nobody likes, least of all a president. Today we say goodbye to the leader of an era, a legendary player, a three-time Europa League winners. Today the Wizard of Sánchez-Pizjuán leaves. Today Éver Maximiliano David Banega leaves. 238 matches, 7 finals played, 3 Europa Leagues won... But beyond the numbers, which are spectacular, a unique player is leaving us, and he made us enjoy ourselves in the five years he was with us, with his class and elegance.
"A unique player is leaving us, and he made us enjoy ourselves with his class and elegance"
I think players on Éver Banega's level deserve to leave on the best on terms. And so today, despite the adverse circumstances of COVID-19, we are here. Éver, today we bid you farewell with honours, with the conviction that you are unrepeatable, but also unforgettable. That is why, and that is what I am left with, you will always live in our memory.
"You're leaving like you wanted to: lifting silverware"
I want to emphasise the commitment that Éver has always had at our club and its shirt, always being available for the team even when he was not in the best condition. Éver has given his all and for that reason we Sevillistas have to feel fortunate to have enjoyed the best years of his career. What I am most happy about is that you are leaving as you wanted to, as you wished at the end of January when you announced your departure: lifting silverware. It's a nice and fair ending for a footballer of your tremendous stature.
Now you are starting a new stage and we wish you the best of luck. Because you deserve it and, above all, because you are one of us. This will always be your home".
