13 MONTHS ON, TWO CONSECUTIVE LALIGA DEFEATS: TIME TO REACT

Sevilla FC fell to a narrow defeat yesterday evening against SD Eibar in LaLiga Matchday 7 (the fifth league match for the club this season), after a match which saw the visitors score with practically their only chance. They were then able to keep the Nervionenses at bay, despite their insistence and perseverance in the second half. 

With that defeat, the Blanquirrojos lost their first match at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán since December 2019, when Villarreal won 2-1 in Matchday 17. The loss against SD Eibar also means that the side have lost two consecutive matches in the league, with a 1-0 away defeat at Granada last weekend. It has been over a year since Sevilla FC lost in consecutive league matches, as they fell against Real Madrid and SD Eibar in September 2019. 

The last defeat at the Sánchez-Pizjuán came ten months ago, when Villarreal won 2-1

After those two defeats thirteen months ago, Julen Lopetegui's men won at home to Real Sociedad, before a heavy defeat at the Camp Nou. They were then able to go eight matches unbeaten, winning five and drawing three. After the aforementioned defeat against Villarreal, Sevilla FC would only go on to lose just two more league matches, both away against Real Madrid and Celta. An eighteen match unbeaten streak across the 19/20 and 20/21 seasons followed, which was ended at Nuevo Los Cármenes last week. 

So, it is now time for the Hispalenses to lift themselves after a rare spell without a win, and next weekend is their chance to put an end to that run. The next league match is a trip to the Basque Country to face Athletic Club at San Mamés.
