It was a night of records for Sevilla FC yesterday against CD Ciudad de Lucena. The Nervionenses, with five Copa del Reys in their trophy cabinet, embarked upon their hundredth campaign in Spain's longest running tournament. Sevilla have enjoyed recent success in the tournament, with yesterday's being the 75th win in the Cup this century. This stat is all the more impressive when you consider that the start of the century was not the kindest to Sevilla FC, both in La Liga and the Cup.
The team lost against Xerez in 00/01 and again in 01/02 against Ciudad de Murcia. Sevilla would have to wait until 02/03 before their first cup win of the century against Real Jaén on 11 September 2002. The team would go on to beat Linares and Numancia before falling in the quarter-finals against Osasuna.
The 75 wins have come against 44 opponents from all levels, from La Liga, to Segunda, Segunda B, and all the way down to Tercera. Interestingly, the teams Sevilla have had the most joy in the cup against have been Atlético Madrid and Deportivo La Coruña - the Nervionenses have beaten both sides five times. Next in the list are Real Betis and RCD Espanyol who have fallen victim to Sevilla three times. Sevilla have victories against the greats of Spanish football, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Athletic Club, as well as clubs who now sadly cease to exist, such as Ciudad de Murcia, Cerreo de Reyes and Atlético Ciudad.
