The possible three represents at the Copa América has been whittled down to two - both for Argentina. The tournament, which starts this Sunday in Brazil after changing hands from Colombia and Argentina, published the squads for the ten participating countries this Thursday.
Lionel Scaloni, Argentina's coach, had to whittle down a squad of 33 that he called up for two Qatar 2022 qualifiers. Argentina picked up two points in those games after draws against Chile and Colombia. Marcos Acuña, Lucas Ocampos and Papu Gómez were all in the squad. Despite Ocampos starting against the Chileans, Scaloni has decided to leave him out of the final squad alongside Juan Foyth, José Luis Palomino, Emiliano Buendía and Julián Álvarez.
Acuña, who played the full ninety minutes against Colombia, and Papu Gómez remain in the squad. Argentina will start their tournament this Monday at 23:00 CEST against Chile in Río de Janeiro. On Saturday 19 at 02:00 CEST they will come up against Uruguay in Brasilia, before playing their third match against Paraguay in the same location on Tuesday 22. They finish their group stage in Cuiabá against Bolivia on Tuesday 29.
