Marcos arrived in the unusual summer of 2020, when we were just getting ready to contest the UEFA Super Cup against Bayern Munich in Budapest. Ever since he joined the team at the training camp in Algorda, he's been one of us. Now, a year and a half later, Acuña returns to the offices at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán to sign a one-year extension to his deal, bringing it to 30 June 2025.
In the season and a half he has been here, the left-back, who we signed from Sporting Lisbon, has played 65 games: 51 in LaLiga Santander, nine in the Champions League, and five in the Copa del Rey. He has two goals to his name, a memorable winner last season at home against Atlético and the first goal in the away derby this season. He has seven assists as well: five in the league, one in the Champions League and one in the cup.
His performances at the club have cemented him as his country's first-choice left back. While he made his debut back in 2016, 14 of his 39 caps for Argentina have come while at Sevilla. His biggest achievement with his country came last summer when Argentina won the Copa América for the first time in 28 years, beating Brazil in the final in a match where Marcos played the full 90 minutes.
