Sevilla FC won their second home match of the week on Saturday evening. After a 3-1 triumph in midweek against Valencia, RCD Espanyol were also defeated as the Blanquirrojos took six points from six to place them on 14 points after six matches. That win also brought up some very interesting and positive statistics in terms of the team's defence, with the hallmarks of Julen Lopetegui's Sevilla continuing to be ever-present.
Firstly, the team against kept a clean sheet, their fourth of the season after just six matches, and they have only conceded twice, to Elche CF and Valencia CF. Defensively, this is their best start to a season since 1970 under Max Merkel, the last season where Sevilla had conceded just twice after seven matchdays. Only Manchester City have conceded fewer goals this season, with one, and Sevilla are level with Chelsea and Napoli in Europe's top five leagues.
It has been a decade since Sevilla FC went undefeated in their first six matches
After six matches (seven matchdays have been played, but the match against Barcelona was postponed), Sevilla FC are unbeaten, a feat which has not been achieved for a decade. The 2011/12 season was the last time that they did not taste defeat in the first six matches, except this time round the team have two more points, and they are second in the league with a game in hand.
Since his arrival at the club in June 2019, Julen Lopetegui has built a rock-solid defence which continues to shine as the coach enters his third season at the club. Next Sunday, the team face a trip to Granada CF, but all eyes are on the UEFA Champions League as the team travel to Germany to play against Wolfsburg in the second match of the Group Stage.
