Mallorca missed a golden opportunity after only 2 minutes, as Lago Junior blazed over the bar from only a few yards out
After barely 2 minutes of the game, the home side should have taken the lead as Lago Junior missed a clear goalscoring opportunity from inside the 6 yard box, as he blazed the cutback from Kubo over the bar. This was an early warning sign for Lopetegui's men, and forced them into having to change their intensity from the offset. Ocampos and Munir were both looking dangerous down the wings, but couldn't unfortunately find the opening goal for themselves. The goal did eventually come in the first half from a corner, which was whipped in by Banega and headed home by Diego Carlos.
Mallorca started the second half with a high intensity as they went in search of the equaliser. With Vicente Gómez's men continuing to push, VAR came into play as they checked a possible foul on Jordán in the home side's box. The check was made, and a penalty was given. Banega, from 12 yards out, made no mistake as he fired past Reina and gave Sevilla a 2 goal cushion at the Son Moix.
Banega's penalty sealed the three points and took the wind out of Mallorca's sails
From that moment, Mallorca started to lose belief as Lopetegui's men sealed things off at the back. His changes made sure of the win, as the fresh legs came on to make a difference, and make sure of the sixth away win of the season.
After the Christmas break, La Liga returns for Sevilla FC on Friday 3rd January 2020, as they host Athletic Club de Bilbao at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.
