Some good play from Sevilla lead to a free-kick, and Banega was able to pick out Franco Vázquez perfectly
Óliver started the move off well on the left-hand side, beating Atlético's pressure and releasing De Jong, who then set Jesús Navas free on the right. The man from Los Palacios was then floored by Lodi, who picked up a booking. From the resulting free-kick, Banega whipped the ball in and Vázquez rose highest to head home beyond Oblak.
The second half began with Atlético de Madrid seeking an equaliser, and kept Lopetegui's men in their own half. They regularly had chances and Sevilla had to suffer, as Atlético continued to create dangerous chances. Diego Costa fired the first warning shot, a header disallowed for an offside, but just five minutes later, from a similar situation, Morata won a header, and levelled the scores under the lights at the Sánchez-Pizjuán in the 60th minute.
De Jong had a big chance to make it 2-1. In the following play, Vaclík saved the penalty from Diego Costa
Sevilla recovered from the hammer blow, and began to play as they had done in the opening 45. Then, both sides had huge chances to take the lead. De Jong found himself unmarked at a corner, but could not head home from a couple of yards out. From the resulting goal kick, Atlético got into the box and won a penalty after Gudelj committed a foul. However, Vaclík was at full stretch to save Diego Costa's penalty.
As the match neared its conclusion, both sides kept going for the win, but Atlético came much closer to finding a winner. Both Diego Carlos and Koundé put their bodies on the line to block Atlético chances, and then Thomas had a clear cut chance to win the match, but he put his shot wide. Sevilla also had a chance to give Chicharito a one-on-one with Oblak, but were unable to do so.
Both Diego Carlos and Koundé made vital blocks late on to secure a point
The points are shared after a typically hard-fought, intense match against Atlético. Sevilla now have 21 points from their first 12 games. Next Sunday, at 21:00, Sevilla will travel to Heliópolis for the first derby of the season, the final fixture before the international break.
