This side keeps on adding chapters to a romantic story between our club and this European competition; for the courage and bravery that has always been defined our club; for the magic of the great nights at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, and, above all, for its fans, Sevilla FC could not fail in another huge European match. They could not fail and did not fail against a Manchester United side that, perhaps surprised by the mystique that surrounds the UEFA Europa League, saw En-Nesyri, with a goal at the start and at the end of the game, and another from Badé, give us the win.
Every Sevilla fan who sat in the stands of the Sanchez-Pizjuan on the night of April 20, 2023, will remember this match. It actually started with Manchester United looking to dominate the ball. As a result of the high pressing exerted by Mendilibar's men, this was to no avail as the home side made a great start to the game. The English side's playmaking was stifled, which led to the first of the three goals. Lamela intercepted Maguire's pass in the opposition area, and would lay the ball off to En-Nesyri who fired past De Gea, the visiting goalkeeper unable to prevent his ferocious strike. With the goal, the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán roared and, from the opening whistle, acted as the twelfth man.
En-Nesyri scored the first goal of the match after Lamela intercepted the ball.
Spurred on by the brilliant support of their fans, the home team would not lower their intensity, constantly suffocating any hint of attacking threat from a Manchester United team that did not look comfortable on the pitch. From a set piece, Rakitic hit the wall before the Croatian player himself finished the play with a powerful shot that did not find the goal. On the counter, Manchester United were looking for a surprise. Wan-Bissaka had the first chance for the visitors that ended with a shot which was saved comfortably by Bono.
The home side were enjoying themselves on the pitch, constantly challenging David De Gea's goal. Gudelj, with a rabona that lifted the crowd's voices, looked for En-Nesyri at the far post with a measured cross that would come to nothing.
Before the first half hour was up, Marcao was replaced by Suso due to injury. With long periods of possession and always winning the ball back after losing possession, the six-time champions played their best football throughout the first half, allowing Ocampos and Lamela to penetrate dangerously into their opponents' area.
Before the end of the first half, Casemiro lost the ball in his own half thanks to an active Acuña who, after setting up Ocampos, saw his compatriot score the second goal of the game, which was eventually disallowed for offside. In stoppage time, Rakitic's volley could have put De Gea in trouble had it not been for his defender's clearance for a corner.
Badé, after the restart, nodded the ball into the back of the visitors' net.
From a corner, Mendilibar's side's first clear-cut chance of the game after the break came the second of the goals for the home side. Badé, rising higher than anyone else in the heart of the box, added the second goal to the scoresheet with a superb header from a corner that had been expertly swung in by Rakitic. A hungry Sevilla, who saw the second leg of the quarter-final as a precious opportunity to enjoy the same kind of football they have always played on historic nights in Europe, wanted more.
The English team did not turn their back on the tie, searching throughout the second half for Rashford, who came off the bench. Casemiro, in one of the few moves his team could finish in the last half hour of the game, tested Bono with a shot that was blocked by the Sevilla keeper.
With the clock ticking down towards the end of normal time, the Nervión side were able to close ranks against the English onslaught in Ten Hag's side's last gasp. In their opponents' half, as they have always done whenever the ball has been on the pitch, Sevilla FC signed off the final stages with a standing ovation to celebrate reaching another UEFA Europa League semi-final with En-Nesyri's winner.
Taking advantage of a poor clearance from De Gea, the Moroccan scored the final goal of the game on Sevilla's home turf. With time running out and the fans singing their hearts out, Sevilla FC sealed their place in the semi-finals against Juventus.
