Argentina and Chile were back in international action last night as they faced off in Santiago del Estero in a qualifier for Qatar 2022, the seventh match of the qualifying stage. The hosts, Argentina, had three Sevillistas in their squad, but only one featured in the match. That was Lucas Ocampos, who started the encounter and was on the pitch when both goals were scored. Messi gave the Albiceleste the lead from the spot after a foul by Lautaro Martínez, but Alexis Sánchez levelled a few minutes later, with ex-Sevillista Gary Medel setting up the equaliser.
After the interval, Atlético de Madrid player Ángel Correa replaced Ocampos, and neither Acuña nor Papu Gómez were brought off the bench. The match would go on to finish 1-1, a result which keeps Argentina in second place, a point behind Brazil, who play today. The Albiceleste are in the direct qualification places, and are four points clear of the playoff spot. Their next match is a trip to Barranquilla to face Colombia, at 01:00 CEST on Wednesday.
