José Luis Mendilibar couldn't hide his disappointment as he gave his assessment of Tuesday night's draw with PSV: "We're always told that VAR doesn't referee the game, but all I know is that the disallowed goal was ruled out by the VAR and their penalty was given in the same way. The referee didn't go to the monitor to watch either of the two incidents. They said it was because he'd already made his decision in real time but I'd have liked him to go to the screen and check. Because he didn't, we go home with just a draw."
On his team's performance, the manager added that "we were able to dig in when we had to. We needed our defence to stand firm in the first half as we struggled to get out, we did well to deny them clear chances. In the second half we got into the game, created openings and it was a strong away showing in Europe. Now we need to pick up points at home but ultimately we are broken after dropping two points in these circumstances."
Now the focus switches to two crucial meetings with Arsenal: "Every point is vital, including the three we could have won today. The next game will also be critical and we will see what happens. We all thought that Arsenal were the favourites but tonight they lost their second group game. This opens up many possibilities and winning at home in our next game would be huge for us." To round things off, the boss explained the Pedrosa substitution: "He was right next to us and asked to come off. We were going to make only the Navas change but in the end decided to make both."
