Sevilla FC's Carlos Marchena has been called upon by the Spanish national team for the upcoming Russian 2018 World Cup. The Spanish Federation, by means of Chairman Luis Rubiales, contacted the Chairman of Sevilla FC, José Castro, to make the request not long after the press conference whereby the dismissal of Julen Lopetegui as the national side's coach was announced, following the news that Lopetegui would assume the position of coach at Real Madrid following the World Cup.
Sevilla FC Chairman called on Director of Football, Joaquín Caparrós, as well as his staff, including Marchena, to discuss the request. There was little to be thought about, although the opinion of newly assigned manager, Pablo Machín, was also taken on board. In such extreme circumstances and at such short notice, the Club has stressed that it will do all it can to try and help Spanish Football at this time. Joaquín Caparrós and deputy, Paco Gallardo, may have to take on extra work for the coming weeks, however they have stressed that this will not affect the planning in place.
Marchena, who equally wants to show his commitment to the national side at such a complicated time, will return to his position at Sevilla FC whenever Spain's World Cup campaign comes to an end. He has already travelled to Russia to join the other coaching staff.
