Although, in recent seasons, Sevilla FC have become used to starting the season well, the truth is that they have never been too good in the opening few matches in the top-flight. In fact, even in the club's best era, you can count on one hand the number of seasons where they have started with two wins. In the club's history, they have won the first two matches only nine times, two of these due to matches being postponed. With the wins against Espanyol and Granada, the side from Nervión have again done this, the first time since 2007/08.

In 2007/08 they started with wins in matchdays 1 and 3, as the second match was postponed

That season, the season of Antonio Puerta's fateful passing, the team began with two big victories at home, beating Getafe and Recreativo 4-1, as the second match in Pamplona was postponed until December after the tragic event. Sevilla drew that game at El Sadar and for that reason the statistic is incomplete. The season before was not like that, 2006/07 began with three straight wins against Levante (4-1), Real Sociedad (1-3) and Real Betis (3-2).

Beyond the 21st century, you have to back to 1991/92 for the last time Sevilla won their three opening games. This was achieved against Athletic Club (0-2), el FC Barcelona (4-2) and Real Sporting (2-1). And in the 80s, they began 1989/90 with wins againts Tenerife (1-0), Celta (0-1) y Logroñés (3-1), only the second time they have won the first two matches with a clean sheet, which was repeated this season.

The record for most consecutive wins at the start of the season is three - on eight occasions. The last season was 2006/07

The first time they won two matches with a clean sheet came in 1984/85, defeating CD Málaga (0-1) and Athletic Club (3-0). The third matchday was a loss in Santander but this was postponed until November, so the fourth matchday was a 1-0 win against Real Madrid in Nervión. You have to go back a further 15 years to find three opening wins, 1970/71 began with wins against RCD Espanyol (0-1), Real Madrid (3-1) and Valencia (0-1).

And to finish, the 40s  saw three starts like this. The 1943/44 saw wins against CE Sabadell (5-2), Real Madrid (3-5) y Athletic Club (3-0). The season before began on the same way, against Real Zaragoza (6-0), Real Betis (2-5) y CD Castellón (4-1). The first time this happened was in 1940/41, defeating FC Barcelona (11-1), Real Oviedo (0-4) and Valencia CF (10-3).
