After last night's UEFA Champions League final in Paris, in some ways, the countdown towards next season's competition begins. For the third season in a row, Sevilla FC will once again be in Pot 2 for the Group Stage draw, which takes place at the end of August after the qualifying rounds. The UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League winners, Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt, are in Pot 1, alongside the champions of the top seven leagues, excluding Real Madrid due to their status as reigning champions. Those six teams are Manchester City, Milan, Bayern Munich, PSG, Porto and Ajax.
From this point onward, the three remaining pots are determined by UEFA coefficient. Pot 2 consists of Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona, Juventus, Atlético Madrid, Sevilla, Leipzig and Tottenham. Although there was never any possibility of an all-Spanish clash in the Group Stage, Sevilla will avoid the five non-Spanish sides in their pot. The other two pots are yet to be officially confirmed as they depend on results in the qualifying round. However, Dortmund, Salzburg, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter, Napoli, Sporting CP and Bayer Leverkusen will be in Pot 3, and will be joined by Benfica if they can win their play-off. Marseille, Club Brugge and Celtic will be in Pot 4 regardless of what happens.
This year's schedule has been altered due to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, with two Matchdays in September on 6th/7th and 13th/14th, followed by three in October, on 4th/5th, 10th/11th and 25th/26th. The final set of fixtures will take place a week later, on 1st/2nd November. The Round of 16 will take place as normal in February, but the remaining rounds will take place later on in the season. The quarters are scheduled for 11th-19th April, the semis on 9th-17th May and the grand final will be played on 10th June in Istanbul.
