Rubén Vargas spoke in his first interview after becoming our first signing of 2025. The Swiss international admitted that, after so many rumours about his arrival it was good to finally get it over the line: “I was waiting a lot for this, but I'm very happy. I'm happy to be here. It was very clear. In the first meeting with Víctor Orta and with the coach I had a very good feeling. I told my agent that I wanted to come here. I already knew about the club. It has a lot of history and they won many titles. I spoke with a good friend, with Djibril Sow, who told me it was very good here. It was an easy decision. He told me it is a very big club and about the fans. I listened to the anthem and I loved it. Now I have to learn it. I want to improve my Spanish and I am very happy."

He knows Sow from the national team, but also Ejuke or Lukebakio, whom he faced when he played for Augsburg: “I know them from Germany because they played for a good club there and we had a good rivalry. They are very good players and I am very happy to be able to play alongside them now.” Now he will have to compete with them for the position: “It's better for me, for them too, to be able to play better. Now we are all in the same team and we have to win”.

He is attracted by the club's history, but also by the city: “I always saw Sevilla winning the Europa League titles. It's a very nice city and I want to learn a lot about the city and the history of the club”. And although he is of Dominican descent and knows that his adaptation will be easier, he is conscious of improving the language: “My Spanish is not perfect, but it won't take me long to learn and I will speak all the time in Spanish. My family was very happy when they found out Sevilla were interested. They know it's a good new opportunity for me.”

"It was always a dream to play in LALIGA and Sevilla play very good football"

He is only 26 years old, but Vargas highlights his track record: “I'm an experienced player because I've played in Germany for many years. It's always been a dream to play in LALIGA and it's very nice. I want to do everything I can to win a lot of games.” About his adaptation, he believes that “Sevilla play very good football. In Germany, the game was very defensive and we had to fight a lot. With my quality I think I can help the team. I can play in all positions. My favorite position is on the wing, either on the left or on the right."

In addition, he sees no problem in having arrived in the middle of the season: “That's football. I've been welcomed here and I don't think I'll have any problems. I know the team is in a difficult situation, but everyone knows who Sevilla are. I want to bring positivity, not think too much about pressure and help when the team needs me. I want to win games and take Sevilla where we need to be. Back to the Europa League or the Champions League. That's my goal.”

He will wear the number '5' left by Ocampos this summer. A number that, along with '16', was the only option available since the 25 can only be used by an outfield player if all the others are occupied: “My birthday is August 5. It's the number that was free, but that's fine. I knew that Jesus Navas had the '16' and that he is a legend here. To finish he sent a message to the fans: “I will give everything for this club, I am very happy and I can't wait to see all the fans very soon."
