It is fair to say that the picture of Manu Bueno celebrating his winning goal against Celta de Vigo with Jesús Navas is pretty symbolic. Navas is a role model for hundreds of academy players, including Manu Bueno, who can now say he scored his first goal for the first team on a very special day - Navas' final game at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. And what a goal it was, finding the corner with a long-range effort.
The last time a younger academy player scored his first goal for the club with an effort from outside the area was Jesús Navas himself - at the San Mamés in April 2005. Wearing the number 31 at the time, Navas' intended cross from the right-hand side ended up past Daniel Aranzubia and in the back of the net. He was 19 years and five months old at the time, playing his 23rd match for the first team; Manu Bueno was just nine months old.
Almost 20 years later, Manu Bueno scores his first goal for the first team on his ninth appearance. At 20 years and 140 days old, he becomes our youngest goalscorer of the decade. The previous occasion a younger player scored for us was April 2019 when an 18-year-old Bryan Gil scored against Rayo Vallecano. With all this talk of academy graduates scoring for the first team, it is worth noting that the last three goals we have scored have all come from academy players. Last time out, Isaac Romero and Juanlu Sánchez scored our second and third at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
