We continue to be stuck on 36 points after a third consecutive loss in the league. Just like last weekend at the Villamarín, things could not have started better, with a great goal by Agoumé, the Frenchman's first goal for the club. However, with one of their few first-half chances Atlético equalised from the penalty spot through Julián Álvarez, after Badé had fouled Gallagher. In the second half the away side sat back and looked to strike on the counterattack and in the end so it proved as a late Pablo Barrios goal in stoppage time condemned us to an agonising defeat.
It was a good start as we took one of the first chances of the game to open the scoring. In a well-worked team move, Carmona won back possession with Lokogna breaking down the left. He played the ball to Vargas, whose inventive back-heel found Pedrosa making an overlapping run. His cross fell to Agoumé on the edge of the area, who curled in a delightful strike past Oblak to make it 1-0. The joy was short-lived however as Vargas was then forced off injured, being replaced by Ejuke. The first chance for the away side came with a cross-shot from Molina that drifted wide. Our second opening game with an Ejuke cross that Akor was unable to divert goalwards. Having largely controlled the first 25 minutes, a mistake from Badé' was then punished as his late challenge on Gallagher gave Atlético a route back into the game with a penalty. Julián Álvarez made no mistake from the spot as equalised from the spot.
Agoumé's first goal for the club wasn't enough to take a point
We deserved more heading into the break at half-time, as AKora was denied by a last-ditch block from Oblak before Ejuke then dribbled past his man and had a shot blocked at the near post again by Oblak. In the second half, we pushed forward with Pedrosa having to be replaced by Gudelj due to injury. Midway through the second half Pimienta bringing on Saúl and Isaac in place of Lokonga and Ejuke.
As the clock ticked into injury time, Pablo Barrios went on a run through the midfielder, and after not being closed down, curled the ball into the bottom corner out of the reach of Nyland. It is now three defeats in a row and our most difficult run of the season with several potential injuries doubts ahead of Friday night's trip to Mestalla to face Valencia.
