Although the team could not win on Tuesday night, Sevilla FC celebrated a goalscoring milestone in Europe's elite competition. Rakitic's penalty brought up the club's 100th goal in the competition, on the same night that Monchi reached 1000 matches as the club's Sporting Director.

The team's first goal in the tournament came all the way back in the 1957/58 season in the European Cup. Vicente Pascual 'Pahuet' was the goalscorer on 19th September 1957 at Viejo Nervión against Benfica in the Round of 32 First Leg, where the team won 3-1. There were nine goals for the club that season, but their next participation came 50 years later, in the 2007/08 season.

In the club's second season, in 2007, Luis Fabiano scored goal number 25

In that second season, the club scored no less than 25 goals in Europe's elite competition, split between the Qualifying Round (6), the Group Stage (14), and the Round of 16 (5). The 25th goal in the club's history came on 27th November 2007with Luis Fabiano scoring the second in a 3-1 win over Arsenal. 13 goals would follow in 2009-10, bringing the tally to 47.

The half-century of goals came in 2010, but in a truly painful match. Sevilla FC were knocked out in the Qualifying Round after a 1-0 defeat in Portugal in the first leg, followed by a 4-3 loss at home. Kanouté scored the third goal on the hour mark, the 50th in the club's historybut it was not enough to send the team through. Eight more goals were scored in the 2015/16 season, with nine in the following campaign taking the team up to 67 goals.

Ben Yedder scored the 75th in 2017, as part of his hat-trick against Maribor

The team were back in the competition the following season, and the 75th goal arrived when Ben Yedder scored the second of his three goals against Maribor on 26th September 2017, the second Group Stage match that season. There were nineteen goals in that 2017-18 season, which took the overall tally up to 86.

Thirteen more goals last season, nine in the Group Stage and four against Dortmund in the last 16 took the club to within one. The first goal this season, therefore, was always going to be the century, and it came last night with a penalty converted by Ivan Rakitic. As with all the other landmark goals, they have come in Seville.
