It may seem paradoxical to think, coming to the end of a pandemic and while the return of fans to stadiums is being studied, that Sevilla FC celebrate today the fourteenth anniversary of what was considered by the authorities as the biggest ever away day in history. On 23 June 2007, a total of 85,000 Sevilla fans travelled to attend the Copa del Rey final against Getafe CF.

Coming from winning three European finals in Eindhoven, Monaco and Glasgow, another incredible chance arose for Sevilla fans who for generations did not know what it was for their team to lift a trophy. The Santiago Bernabéu was packed to the rafters after a deluge of trains, buses, and cars arrived to Spain's capital.

It was an incredible opportunity for generations of Sevilla fans see their dream come true

The match will always be remembered for Kanouté's run to score the only and deciding goal in the goal, as well as Andrés Palop's save against Güiza in a one-on-one. That historic final, which saw Sevilla FC win domestic silverware for the first time in 59 years, had the following starting XI: Palop; Daniel Alves, Javi Navarro, Escudé, Dragutinovic; Jesús Navas, Poulsen, Renato, Puerta; Kanoute and Luis Fabiano.

5,114 days have passed since Javi Navarro lifted that trophy, painting Madrid in a different kind of white and red. Today, 14 years later and with a multitude of European titles won, Sevilla fans are edging ever closer to the chance to celebrate together once again.
